Homages
El Siwi has long painted in conversation with other artists. In 2017 he dedicated a series of paintings to those he admires, among them Bosch, Pisanello, Leonardo, the Mughal miniaturists, Grandville, Klee, Miró, Marini and Picasso. The dialogue runs through other works too, from Étant donné, to Duchamps and Vincent to Mahmoud Said, his tribute to the pioneer of modern Egyptian painting.
It extends to his writing: El Siwi has translated Leonardo da Vinci's A Treatise on Painting and Paul Klee's Theory of Form into Arabic.
